SPC flooring subfloor flatness: what to check before ordering

A flooring order can match the approved colour and still arrive at a site that is not ready for installation. For a distributor supplying a renovation in Brazil or a commercial interior in Uzbekistan, the missing detail may be the substrate rather than the plank. This guide is about documenting floor geometry before purchase. It complements moisture checks; it does not replace them or supply a universal installation tolerance.

Short answer

Ask for the exact flooring model's installation instructions, a measured substrate survey and a written preparation plan. A floor that looks level in a photograph is not necessarily flat enough for the selected system. Do not use extra underlay as an assumed repair for unevenness.

Flat, level and dry are different acceptance questions

Level describes the relationship to horizontal. Flatness describes local departures from a plane. Dryness is a separate condition requiring the specified test method. A surface can satisfy one and fail another. Before asking an installer to approve the room, identify the current substrate, previous coverings, repairs and any changes in height at doorways. Request the relevant instructions for the exact SPC construction and locking system, including permitted substrate types and underlay. Tarkett's linked guide illustrates why substrate condition is important for its own flooring collection; its values must not be transferred to a different SPC product. Keep the manufacturer's instructions and the project specification together so an attractive sample does not become the only purchase criterion.

Create a usable survey, not one reassuring photograph

Ask the site professional to record the survey method, measuring tool, locations, date and observed deviations. Mark high spots, depressions, changes between rooms and previously patched areas on a simple floor plan. Measurements should be compared with the current model-specific requirement, not a tolerance copied from a search result. Include door clearances and transitions to adjacent finishes because preparation can change finished floor height. Photographs should show where observations were taken, rather than merely showing a straightedge somewhere in the room. If the site team has not inspected the base, label the survey as pending and make that uncertainty visible to the buyer. This is a practical handoff record, not a claim that one visual inspection is a complete installation assessment.

Assign preparation before scheduling the delivery

A commercial quotation should distinguish the flooring supply from substrate preparation. Ask who will assess repairs, specify compatible preparation materials and accept the completed surface. Do not assume a thicker plank or a softer underlay makes an uneven substrate acceptable. Check whether the selected floor has attached underlay and whether an additional layer is permitted at all. Where existing flooring will be removed, the final preparation scope may remain provisional until the substrate is exposed. Agree when it will be reassessed and who can change the programme. For a multi-room order, a single approved room does not automatically release every other room. Keep preparation, moisture acceptance and delivery storage as separate checkpoints to avoid treating a delivered pallet as approval to begin installation.

Put the acceptance evidence into the purchase handoff

Record the model, plank construction, installation-guide revision, substrate description, measurement record, preparation responsibility and acceptance date. A sample approval confirms what was actually reviewed; it does not prove that every site condition is suitable. If the project changes the underlay, substrate or installation method, send the revised combination back for assessment. Buyers often ask whether they can quote flooring before the survey: an indicative supply quote can be discussed, but site suitability should remain explicitly unresolved. Ask the installer for a room-by-room release rather than a generic statement that the floor is fine. Store these records with the order so the importer, local distributor and installation team are working from the same conditions instead of conflicting messages.

Next step

Send the intended room use, substrate type, measured survey and selected flooring reference with your inquiry. Use the catalog to shortlist finishes, then request the current installation documentation for the exact model.
