First question: what is the wall actually made of?
“Plasterboard” can describe different board types, finishes and wall assemblies. Ask whether the board is new or previously painted, whether joints and corners are stable, and whether the framing can carry the intended finish. Inspect for loose paper, dust, cracks, movement, water staining and soft areas. A coating that peels off with the adhesive is not a dependable bond surface.
For an existing wall, identify the source of any dampness before covering it. In a wet room, assess waterproofing, penetrations and ventilation as an assembly. A panel face that tolerates splashes does not make untreated board behind it waterproof.
Choose the fixing method for the actual substrate
Do not specify “construction adhesive” without checking the panel back, the board finish and the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions. Mechanical fixing may require a connection to framing or a designed batten system rather than screws placed anywhere in the board. Confirm movement joints and how the assembly terminates at ceilings, skirtings and doors. GA-216 is a useful reference for understanding gypsum-board application and finishing; it is not a substitute for product-specific installation instructions.
Use a small trial bay before a full order
- Record the board type, wall condition, primer or coating and proposed fixing products.
- Test a representative panel on the actual surface, including a corner and joint.
- Check panel flatness, edge trim, door clearance and access to services.
- Ask for the exact SKU’s current dimensions, weight and installation guidance.
- Have the responsible installer or designer confirm local moisture, fire and structural requirements.
For a distributor, this trial prevents a common mismatch: selling a finish sample as if it proved that every existing wall can accept the same fixing system.
Quick answer for a buyer
PVC panels may be installed over plasterboard when the board and supporting wall are sound, dry and suitable for a verified fixing detail. If the wall is damp, unstable or carrying loads the proposed detail cannot support, solve that problem first.
