PU Stone Panels in Iraq: Can an Arch Be Detailed?
An arched opening can make a stone-look feature wall distinctive, but a rectangular panel does not automatically follow the curve. For an Iraqi buyer, the decision is not whether PU looks convincing in a catalogue. It is whether the selected relief, opening geometry and edge treatment can be assembled into an acceptable finish. A small feasibility review is cheaper to organise than a full order based on an untested drawing.

Treat the arch as a fabrication detail requiring supplier and installer review. Confirm cutting, edges and fixing on a representative mockup; never assume that every PU panel bends or that a cut edge has the same finish as its face.
Describe the arch instead of sending one photograph
Provide the opening width, height, wall thickness and the shape of the curve. Show whether the panels stop at the opening, return into the reveal or continue across a separate curved surface. Include photographs only as context because perspective can conceal the actual geometry. Identify the main viewing directions and the distance from which exposed edges will be seen. A Baghdad showroom entrance and a private interior may have different access and appearance priorities, but neither location proves the material will suit the detail. Ask the supplier to review the exact proposed product and drawing.
Choose a deliberate boundary treatment
The arch edge might use a separate border, a cut panel edge with an approved finish, or a different material inside the reveal. Each option changes quantities and workmanship. Do not specify a hidden seam without establishing how adjacent reliefs meet. Ask which touch-up materials or accessories are available and which remain the installer’s responsibility. A deeper relief can make an irregular cut more visible, so evaluate the actual profile rather than a flat print. Keep any colour-matching expectation realistic and obtain a sample where the treatment is important to the overall design.
Test the difficult portion before the easy wall
A useful mockup includes the tightest curve or most visible transition, not merely a rectangular panel in the middle of the wall. Have the installer use the proposed cutting and fixing method, following the product instructions. Check the appearance of cut edges, the continuity of the relief and any small pieces near the opening. Confirm that the substrate is suitable and that the decorative layer is not being relied on for structural support. Safe handling and cutting arrangements should be planned by the responsible team; generic handling references do not establish a particular panel’s safe cutting method.
Turn the accepted detail into an order schedule
Once the mockup is accepted, separate full panels from pieces needed for the arch, returns and possible repairs. Do not assign a universal waste percentage: the pattern and opening geometry determine the cutting yield. Record the orientation and any numbered installation sequence so the installer does not recreate the design from memory. Include the approved edge-finish materials in the scope and identify where spare pieces will be stored. If a supplier cannot confirm the proposed detail, simplify the design or choose a suitable alternative before purchase rather than asking the site team to improvise after delivery.
Before you request a quotation
- Provide measured arch geometry and wall thickness.
- Confirm whether cut edges or separate borders will remain visible.
- Approve a mockup of the most difficult curve.
- Base quantities on the accepted cutting layout, not a standard allowance.
Frequently asked questions
Can PU stone panels always bend around an arch?
No. Flexibility and permitted fabrication depend on the exact panel; obtain written guidance.
Is a flat sample enough to approve the opening?
No. The critical questions are at the cut edge, reveal and curved transition.
