Define what “low VOC” means in the target market
Distributors often receive a product sheet with “eco-friendly” or “low VOC” printed on it. That wording does not identify a test method, limit, sampling date or exact product. Ask which destination-market requirement or purchasing specification is being claimed and request the matching evidence. Avoid turning a test on one substrate into a blanket claim for a finished range.
Check the chamber report
ISO 16000-9:2024 sets out a laboratory chamber method for determining area-specific VOC emissions from samples of building products under defined climate conditions. A report should identify the tested sample, preparation, chamber conditions, measurement points, analytes and results. Buyers should compare those details with the delivered SKU and its intended room use.
The term VOC covers many substances. The US EPA's technical overview explains why definitions and measurement context matter. A total VOC figure without a method and individual-substance context may be insufficient for a particular requirement.
Review the installed assembly
- Identify the panel's substrate, decorative film, coating and backing.
- Ask whether testing included the exact current formulation and production variant.
- Request separate information for adhesive, primer, sealant or backing board where used.
- Check storage, acclimation and ventilation guidance for the chosen installation.
- Retain the approved sample and report reference with the purchase order.
Do not promise that a panel alone guarantees indoor air quality. Ventilation, room size, other materials and installation products also affect the occupied space. A responsible quotation names the evidence and its limits.
A buyer's one-page request
Ask the supplier to send the exact model code, current material description, emissions report, tested specimen identification, applicable market criterion and installation products. If a document is unavailable, mark the claim as unverified and continue the sourcing discussion without presenting it as certified.
